Gen Con Wants List

With Gen Con fast approaching in almost exactly two weeks, I am getting more and more psyched about it. I have all but one board and one miniature to finish for Pulp City demos before then. As for the things I will be looking for there, the list is much smaller than I expected, though I expect it will grow while I’m there.

Malifaux – This game has a lot of buzz right now. They only had a closed alpha demo thing last year, but the rumor is they’ll have the book and new starter boxes. I picked up the Seamus box last year along with Hamlin the Rat Catcher. This time I think I’ll pick up the Perdita or Resurrectionists box depending on what I think of the rules when I read them.

Pulp City – I will likely be behind on a few things by the time the convention rolls around, so I’ll get caught up then.

Arcane Legions – I was really kinda excited about this game until I saw the Roman booster box art, which depicted a Spartan in power armor and wielding a gun of some sort. The Han Army booster art, however, has me somewhat interested again. I’ll probably get a demo of this just to be sure one way or the other.

Warlands – The idea of playing a game with Hot Wheels has me intrigued. If the rules look good, I may buy the book.

Uncharted Seas – I’ve played a quick game once with two other people and I did think it was cool, but like many other games, there isn’t anyone playing it regularly.

CthulhuTech – Damnation View or Mortal Remains – Whichever is out, I will likely buy it. I really like the setting of this RPG and would love to play it someday.

All in all, I think I’ll just be looking at stuff moreso than buying.

Warhammer Fantasy Battles – Some progress on the Ogres

warhammer_logo_front Just wanted to post the progress I’ve made on the Ogre Kingdoms stuff I’ve purchased. I have 2 units of 3 Ogre Bulls with Bellower and 2 units of 3 Ironguts with Bellower assembled. In progress now are two units of 2 Leadbelchers. I got some Gnoblar Trappers in the mail yesterday and I have a unit of 25 Gnoblar Fighters to throw together. Along with all of that is a Maneater and a Butcher still in their packaging. The things I need to pick up still is another box of Gnoblar Fighters and a Tyrant. I know that will be more than the 1,000 points Brian and I agreed on, but I like options and I like assembling figures.

wotrrulebook_873x627.jpg John, Tim and I agreed to meet over at John’s house last Friday night for another game of War of the Ring. Joel has had an interest in the game, so he was invited to come by as well, which he did. JR was only able to show up for a short time due to the Brickyard 400 race and him working at a restaurant. Tim let Joel handle a portion of his army, so it was two on two.

wotrrulebook_873x627.jpg I’ve been trying to make it so I go over the The Game Preserve in the Fashion Mall every other Thursday to play War of the Ring with the folks there. I knew Jeff was wanting to play me last time I was there, so we set up to play soon after we both got there. The people who play there don’t have too many points of stuff yet, so we had to play pretty small games.

First game was Rohan vs. Elves.

star_wars_miniatures_logo.gif Fred and I met up at Games To Die For last night to play some Star Wars Miniatures. After picking up the Ogre Kingdoms book (since I forgot to get it on Monday) and waiting until 6:30 in case Joe showed up, we finally got started. First game was my Bounty Hunters vs. his New Republic. Read More »

Warhammer Fantasy Battles- I bought in…again!

warhammer_logo_front Seems like I can never get away from Warhammer Fantasy. After I get rid of one army (Lizardmen), something else makes me buy back into the game even though I don’t play it all that much (though I’d like to). This time the impetus was having a gift card to The Game Preserve and not having anything to really spend it on. I just sold my Lizardmen army, but Brian working on his Dark Elves made me start thinking abou thte game again. At the Keystone branch of the GP, I saw a discounted Ogre Kingdoms Battalion. I then researched on-line as to whether it was a good deal and whether the Ogre Kingdoms are a decent army. The more I looked, the more I liked. No, they aren’t an uber-competitive army, but they are more of a finesse army than one might think. So I purchased the battalion and a Butcher model, which was also discounted to $25. I basically spent $100 for about 1,000 points worth of Ogres, which is about the point value Brian and I had talked about playing. All in all, a great deal. I’ve already started cutting the models from the sprues this morning. Excitement abounds!!

pulp_city.jpg Brian and I agreed to meet at Games To Die for to play a game of Pulp City again. I’d finished painting Nuke and Hellsmith, so I was pretty pumped about it. We decided that since we hadn’t played with Agendas in a while, we’d do that to mix things up. He decided he wanted to play Villains (no Nuke or Hellsmith for me!!), so I played straight-up Heroes. He used Six Feet Under last time, so I decided to use him this time. Read More »

l5r-logo-web All this time I thought the Kyuden Hida from Celestial Edition was identical to the Kyden Hida from diamond (I believe). Turns out that since the new Kyuden Hida says “Reaction: After the resolution of an action whose effects attached a Follower from your hand: Draw a card.” (emphasis mine) and Secluded Outpost is a trait of the Holding, not an action, the two no longer interact. With that in mind, I’ll be switching to Shattered Peaks Castle.

I did get to eyeball Jeremy’s Crab deck and it looks like there’s a ton of money rares in there that I either can’t find or can’t afford. However, I think with the cash I have spent on the cards I got, I have a pretty decent deck. Now I just need to make time to play it.

War of the Ring – 750 points – Elves vs. Isengard…again!

wotrrulebook_873x627.jpg Bill and I set up another game of War of the Ring over at Games To Die For. My excitement for this game is pretty high right now. It seems a l lot simpler and much quicker than Warhammer Fantasy. The only real downside being the lack of variety in races for the game. A lot of the evil armies have Orcs, but they are all pretty much the same. Within each army, I guess there is some variety since you have the monsters and such. Maybe it just seems like there’s a lack of variety? I mean in the Mordor army you have Orcs, Uruk-Hai, evil humans, Trolls, etc. but in Warhammer it’s a little more segregated (i.e., Orcs and Goblins have Squigs and Giants, but that’s about it besides the Orcs and Goblins themselves).

Anyway…we played 750 points so that we might actually complete more than just a couple of turns. We restricted our lists such that there was only the possibility for one Epic Hero and one Legendary formation for each of us. Read More »
