Warhammer 40,000 – Tyranids vs. Imperial Guard, 800 points
Jan 26th, 2010 by Totengraber

warhammer40000logo.gif Brian wanted me to teach him Warhammer 40,000 last Thursday. Like an idiot, I lent Fred my rulebook, so I had to recall most things from memory. We muddled through and I think we got most things right. I gave Brian the choice of playing either the Tyranids or the Imperial Guard. He chose the Nids.

I’m not going to try to remember the lists we used or specific things that happened in the game since it was really a “demo” of sorts. I will, however, say that the Tyranids decimated the Imperial Guard via mostly shooting attacks.

It was a fun game, if a bit frustrating when trying to remember all the rules. I’m hoping he got a good feel for them and that we’ll play again soon!

Warmachine – Mk II – Khador vs. Mercs, 35 points
Jan 26th, 2010 by Totengraber

warmachine_logo_web_bl.jpg Well, this was my first game using the official MkII rules. Joel and I decided to play 35 points with him using Fiona. I think he thought I might bring the Cryx instead of Khador, but I had enough stuff ready to go (assembly-wise anyway).

Warhammer 40,000 – 800 points, Tyranids vs. Necrons
Jan 20th, 2010 by Totengraber

warhammer40000logo.gif Fred acquired a bunch of Necrons from a friend and has been wanting to learn the game. He asked me on Saturday to teach him. Well, having not played in a long time myself, we got a lot of help from folks in the store last night. Dave, Mike and Jeff were quite helpful with many of the rules I’d forgotten and didn’t want to take the time to look up, which kept the game going and hopefully, Fred learning.

Since I had no idea exactly how many models Fred had, I estimated he’d have 20 or so Warriors, 3 Destroyers, 3 or so Scarab Swarms and the Lord. Turns out he has 70+ Warriors and probably 10+ Scarab Swarms. It also turns out he has a Necron Destroyer Lord as well. In either case, I thought an 800 point game would work well for learning the game and for me to learn the new Tyranid codex, not to mention 800 points is just below what I have painted.

HeroClix – My first tournament experience
Jan 18th, 2010 by Totengraber

heroclix_logo_1 Yes, I said HeroClix. See, a friend of mine, Fred, is really into the game and has been helping me acquire models to play. He’s invited me to the local comic shop’s (Downtown Comics – West) HeroClix tournaments many times, but I never felt comfortable enough with the rules to join in. This weekend’s tournament was 2,000 points, so we were sure to see a lot of the ‘broken’ colossals. It also didn’t bode well that there is currently no retired list since NECA took over the game. I had no experience with these things and I was looking to just get to play versus new people and make some friends. Fred was kind enough to lend me a number of models to fill out the 2,000 points and make an Asgardian team as I had nothing even close.

Here’s what I used:

Warhammer 40K – New Tyranids Codex
Jan 18th, 2010 by Totengraber

warhammer40000logo.gif Yesterday I picked up the new Tyranids codex, which I think is pretty damned cool. I know lots of people are upset about most of the changes, like the cost of Carnifexes and the way the biomorphs work, but I quite like it. I still need to pick up some of the new stuff, like Hive Guard and Trygon/Mawlocs and a few more of the old things like another Zoanthrope and maybe a Biovore. I tried to add up all the points I have last night and it looks like a little over 2,200.

On a side note, Fred was able to acquire some Necrons (for free!!), so we’ll probably be throwing own this Tuesday. It’ll give me a chance to remember the 40K rules, learn the new Tyranids and for him to learn the main rules and his army. The only sad thing about the Necrons is the amount of metal models that are pretty much essential, unless you want to buy more of the plastics and do some conversion work.

Warmachine – I now have a metric ton of Khador stuff
Jan 18th, 2010 by Totengraber

warmachine_logo_web_bl.jpg A shipment from across the sea, which I assumed had gotten lost forever showed up at my door the other day, adding to the collection of Khador stuff I’d acquired to replace it. I spent a good part of the weekend replacing the spears on the Iron Fang Pikemen with brass rod, which is a lot more painstaking than it sounds. I also spent several hours stripping paint from many of the models I received over the last week or two.

Here’s what I’ve got now:

Warhammer Fantasy – 700 points Ogres vs. Vampire Counts – league game
Jan 11th, 2010 by Totengraber

warhammer_logo_front Well, the Ogres finally had a well-earned victory in the Warhammer League. I played a young guy named John, who I’d played a 600 point game last week where we drew due to his having to leave early.

Here’s the list he used to my recollection:

  • Vampire w/an item that lets him keep a dispel die from the previous turn to use as a power die
  • 10 Skeletons w/full command and some banner that makes their unit strength twice their normal number
  • 10 Grave Guard
  • 10 Crypt Ghouls
  • 3 Cairn Wraiths
  • The Vampire had the spells Raise Dead and Invocation

What I’ve been up to since the last post
Jan 5th, 2010 by Totengraber

Well, I admit I have been neglecting this blog for a little while now, so I figured I’d post some of what’s been going on in the last month or so.
