Just an Update
Aug 19th, 2010 by Totengraber

I just wanted to post an update on what I’ve been up to lately.

Of course, I went to Gen Con a couple of weeks ago. The convention was awesome as always. Fred and I hung out a lot together playing HeroClix. I played in a pre-release event for the next set, Web of Spider-Man, which was cool since Spider-Man has been my favorite comic since I was a kid. I saw a lot of people I hadn’t seen in a while at the convention, though regrettably, I didn’t spend much time with them. I ran several Pulp City demo events like I did in 2009. This year I added on a tournament and a scenario event where Ulthars are invading the city. This was Maciej’s idea. We only had 6 people for the tournament, which was 4 less than the tickets we sold, but it still went well. I think everyone had fun.

For the most part, since Gen Con the main focus of my time has been on assembling the Pulp City miniatures Maciej has been so kind as to provide me with for my work at Gen Con. I have a total of 26 to assemble, with 8 left to go.

Several of us in the area bought into MERCS, so I have assembled the five models I bought at the convention. Joel has been reading up on the rules and I hope to try this game out soon.

I’ve been on a big superhero-gaming kick lately. Fred and I have discussed playing a Savage Worlds game using the Super Powers Companion. I bought a setting book from 1st edition Mutants and Masterminds to use as the backdrop. Should I fin a time and place to run this, I think it’ll be a blast!

I’ve also been working on promoting Pulp City more in the area. I did a demo game with Bryan and his girls last Sunday and come September 12th, I’ll be running another demo event. The latter will be run much like the Ulthar event at Gen Con, though not all the minis will be painted, unfortunately. I still think it’ll be fun.

Anyway, that’s what I’ve been up to. I hope to get some pictures posted and maybe a battle report or two for stuff I’ve been playing.

HeroClix – My first tournament experience
Jan 18th, 2010 by Totengraber

heroclix_logo_1 Yes, I said HeroClix. See, a friend of mine, Fred, is really into the game and has been helping me acquire models to play. He’s invited me to the local comic shop’s (Downtown Comics – West) HeroClix tournaments many times, but I never felt comfortable enough with the rules to join in. This weekend’s tournament was 2,000 points, so we were sure to see a lot of the ‘broken’ colossals. It also didn’t bode well that there is currently no retired list since NECA took over the game. I had no experience with these things and I was looking to just get to play versus new people and make some friends. Fred was kind enough to lend me a number of models to fill out the 2,000 points and make an Asgardian team as I had nothing even close.

Here’s what I used:

Gen Con 2009 Recap
Aug 18th, 2009 by Totengraber

As some might have already suspected, I haven’t posted here for the last week or so due to the yearly gaming convention called Gen Con held in the local metropolis of Indianapolis (how convenient!!).

The nice thing about this year as opposed to previous years is that I had some company for the drive and some help with parking and gas costs. Fred was that company, and what great company it was. I had a blast having him ride with me. Read the rest of this entry »

Pulp City – Level 5 game, Heroes vs. Villains – Now with Agendas!
Jul 17th, 2009 by Totengraber

pulp_city.jpg Brian and I agreed to meet at Games To Die for to play a game of Pulp City again. I’d finished painting Nuke and Hellsmith, so I was pretty pumped about it. We decided that since we hadn’t played with Agendas in a while, we’d do that to mix things up. He decided he wanted to play Villains (no Nuke or Hellsmith for me!!), so I played straight-up Heroes. He used Six Feet Under last time, so I decided to use him this time. Read the rest of this entry »

Flames of War – Another 1500 point game British Infantry vs. British Air Landing
Jun 26th, 2009 by Totengraber

fow_logo_color Joel is potentially going to a tournament this weeknd, so I offered to play him in a game of Flames of War to help him practice. I’m no great opponent, but I thought it would help. We played with the same armies as last ime, but we played the Breakthrough mission. I ended up being the attacker and he the defender. He chose his deployment quarters and I chose to deploy on my side of the table in the right-hand quarter. Because of the mission rules, Joel was in Prepared Positions which allowed me, being British, to use the Nightfighting rules.

Just some painting progress…
Jun 23rd, 2009 by Totengraber

Over the weekend I was able to get a lot of things done:

Primered all my assembled War of the Ring minis. (24 High Elf Warriors, 24 High Elf Archers, 24 High Elf Spearmen, 24 Wood Elves, Glorfindel, Ent and a number of characters)

Made bases for my Flames of War Churchill Crocodiles since when I pinned the trailers on, the joint seemed finda flimsy.

Painted two Flames of War British M10C SP (17 pdr) tanks. Man, FoW stuff paints up super-quick!

Painted my two HQ stands for my Flames of War British army. They only need dullcoated now.

Applied a basecoat of Trollblood Highlight on my Ent. My sexy/awesome and honest critic wife commented that she wasn’t sure about the base color, but I think some washes will make it look more like a tree.

Worked some more on Nuke and Hellsmith. The toxic glow effect still needs work according to the amazing critic-wife, “It looks like a bunch of green worms on top of yellow goop”.

All in all, a lot of progress made.

Pulp City – Level 5 game Heroes vs. A.R.C.
Jun 19th, 2009 by Totengraber

pulp_city.jpg Brian and I played a game of Pulp City last night. I brought in my board I’m building for Gen Con and some buildings. I still need to paint those as well. We decided to play alevel 5 game, which is what we usually play anyway. We also decided not to use any Agendas as we hadn’t played in a few weeks and sometimes you just want your beatstick to inflict some pain without any real goal.

Flames of War – 1500 points, Late War, British Infantry vs. British Air Landing
Jun 18th, 2009 by Totengraber

fow_logo_color Since the Star Wars RPG didn’t happen, Joel and I played a game of Flames of War instead. He had recently finished painting a large chunk of my army, so I was eager to get them on the table and play.  He’d also built me a custom objective marker using the extra pieces from my Tom Stanley box and some extra models he had lying around. The army looks really good on the table. The only problem I had with my models was identifying which stands went with which platoon. I fixed that just this morning by putting a stripe of color on the back of the base. I used some primary and somewhat bright colors so that they are easily idenifiable from just about anywhere on the table.

Here’s my army list:

  • HQ
  • Rifle Platoon (3 sections, PIAT, light mortar)
  • Rifle Platoon (3 sections, PIAT, light mortar)
  • Machine Gun Platoon (2 sections in MMG Carriers)
  • Mortar Platoon (2 sections, 2 Observer teams)
  • Universal Carrier Patrol (3 UCs)
  • Wasp Carrier Patrol (3 Wasps)
  • M10 17pdr SP (1 section)
  • Churchill Crocodiles (3 tanks with trailers)
  • Anti-Tank Guns (2 sections of 6pdrs)

I am honestly not sure what Joel’s army list consists of.

Lots of progress on stuff I don’t really need progress on
Jun 16th, 2009 by Totengraber

So, I had a lot of time this weekend and yesterday to get some stuff assembled or painted. Well, I decided to work on Warhammer 40K stauff instead of the Pulp City stuff I should have been working on. I got a 10-man Assault Squad, a 10-man Tactical Squad, a few Heavy/Special weapon models, Shrike, a Rhino and a Drop Pod assembled and primed. Unfortunately, on some of the marines I have the fuzzy primer thing going on. I will try getting a brush or something to try and clean it up, but it is very upsetting to put that much work into assembling figures to have that happen. I wonder if the trick for cloudy clear coat will work for primer (re-coating usually fixes it for me).

Bad week for gaming
Jun 12th, 2009 by Totengraber

On the heels of not being able to play D&D this week, Thursday’s gaming got messed up as well. I got a call from work at about 5:30pm last night, which ended up making me late for a Pulp City game I’d scheduled with Brian. I finally got done with my work, packed up my stuff and trudged out through the pouring rain to my car. I got about halfway there when I realized I’d left my Pulp City cards at home. The traffic was terrible, so I decided I wasn’t going to go back for them. I did end up at the store, so I just hung out and talked with Joel and Brian and then watched some Flames of War games.

Speaking of Flames of War, Read the rest of this entry »
