Well, I admit I have been neglecting this blog for a little while now, so I figured I’d post some of what’s been going on in the last month or so.

Gallery Update – Tyranids and Ogres

2009
11.30

I got more stuff painted. The Ogres are more for the Warseer “Tale of Fantasy Players” painting-motivation thread. We try to get 200 points painted per month. This month’s total is 222, which puts me pretty well ahead of the game. It’s Ogres, so it’s pretty easy to keep up. On the Tyranid front, I have about 350 points fully painted now. These have been easier than I thought they’d be. I went with a speed-painting technique that’s pretty easy to replicate no matter the size of the model.

Warhammer 40,000 – Some painting started on the Nids

warhammer40000logo.gif Here’s a pic of some Spinegaunts I finished the other day. I decided to go with a less “colorful” scheme to try and emulate insects on Earth. It didn’t really turn out how I envisioned, they actually turned out better!! when they are all grouped together, they look really cool, IMHO. I have 5 Termagants that are started as well. I anticipate them being finished by Thursday morning.

I’ve also been working on finishing some Ogre Ironguts as well. I hope for them to be done by next week.

Lots of progress on stuff I don’t really need progress on

So, I had a lot of time this weekend and yesterday to get some stuff assembled or painted. Well, I decided to work on Warhammer 40K stauff instead of the Pulp City stuff I should have been working on. I got a 10-man Assault Squad, a 10-man Tactical Squad, a few Heavy/Special weapon models, Shrike, a Rhino and a Drop Pod assembled and primed. Unfortunately, on some of the marines I have the fuzzy primer thing going on. I will try getting a brush or something to try and clean it up, but it is very upsetting to put that much work into assembling figures to have that happen. I wonder if the trick for cloudy clear coat will work for primer (re-coating usually fixes it for me).

Warhammer 40,000 – Got more stuff assembled…

warhammer40000logo.gif We have an ongoing Warhammer 40K campaign being run by Dave, one of the employees at Games To Die For.  So far we’ve had three turns and I have only had to play one game so far. The one game I played was against a guy named Chris. Apparently, he is wanting to play a game against me again. He claims, “You’re a fun opponent.”. Based on the way he trash talked me the other day, I think he thinks I’ll be an easy win. He said things like, “So, are you going to be sure to put Shrike in a unit this time? That’s fine, I’ll just have to wipe out the whole unit then!”. It may be true that I’ll be an easy win for him, but I’m going to try my best to make him work for it.

This weekend I picked up a Space Marine Drop Pod and I worked on assembling a Plasma Cannon marine as well as a Plasmagun marine and a second unit of Assault Marines. Hopefully that will be enough anti-MEQ (Marine equivalent) to keep his army at bay.

Warhammer 40,000 – 1,000 points Chaos vs. Space Marines

warhammer40000logo.gif Our local store, Games To Die For, is running a Warhammer 40,000 (40K) campaign called “Spoils of War”. We’re using a hex map to determine territories and there’s no real “end to the campaign. We have to play our games in a two week period and could have to play several games based on who attacks who.

Chris and I had scheduled our game for this Thursday due to the fact I had attacked one of his territories. I am familiar with Chris and I wanted to get in a game. I had no real visions of winning, I just wanted to expand my list of opponents. Chirs had canceled our game on Wednesday, but ended up calling me at about 5:30pm yesterday to say he was at the store and ready to play. Normally, I work on a list and read up on my special rules during the day before each game I play. In this case, I didn’t have that opportunity and as a result made some tactical errors. I’m not saying Chris wouldn’t have won anyway, I’m just saying the game might have been a little less one-sided and more fun.

Here’s the list I used:

  • Captain Kayvaan Shrike
  • Scouts x5 w/Telion upgrade (sniper rifles, cloaks, missile launcher)
  • Tactical Marines x10 (missile launcher, meltagun, power weapon, rhino)
  • Assault Marines x10 (flamer, power fist, power weapon)
  • Terminators x5 (storm bolters, power fists, power weapon)

Chris’ list (from memory):

  • Chaos Lord in Terminator Armor (daemon weapon)
  • Khorne Berserkers x10 (rhino w/havoc launcher, power weapon)
  • Chaos Space Marines x9 (power weapon, meltagun, mark of Nurgle)
  • Chaos Space Marines x5 (power weapon)
  • Land Raider (lascannon, heavy bolter, havoc launcher)

Mission: Annihilation

Deployment: Dawn of War

We set up terrain and deployed our first units, which according to Chris’ description of the deployment, led me to believe I had to deploy Shrike and two Troop choices. Of course, this was a silly assumption as he didn’t deploy his own HQ.

Basically, it came down to his units assaulting and killing my units. He ended up with 4 Kill Points to my 1. No big deal, he gets to keep his territory, I learn some mistakes I made, and we had a good game. I look forward to playing more 40K games against some new opponents.

Lots of Gallery Updates

I finally finished lots of figures this week. Namely, from Pulp City: Six Feet Under, Mourn, Red Riding Hoodoo and Solar. This brings my “need to paint before Gen Con” list up to 50% done. Since I had the camera and lights out, I decided to take pics of some old Confrontation stuff, some WIP Space Marines and Lizardmen, and an almost-finished Apebot (just the base left!) that I started work on today.

Go check out the Gallery here.

Warhammer 40,000 – The Purge vs. Vanilla Marines

2008
12.12

John and I set up a game of Warhammer 40,000 for this past Thursday at 1,750 points. This is only my second time playing the 5th edition rules, which as I remembered it, is a good set of rules. Here’s the list I made:

  • Chaos Lord w/Mark of Nurgle, Plaguebringer, Plasma Pistol
  • Plague Marines (x7), Plasmagun x2, Champ, Rhino w/Daemonic Possession
  • Plague Marines (x7), Plasmagun, Meltagun, Champ, Rhino w/Daemonic Possession
  • Chaos Space Marines (x14), Flamer x2, Icon of Nurgle, Champion w/Powerfist
  • Chaos Havocs (x7), Lascannon x2, Heavy Bolter x2, Icon of Nurgle, Champion
  • Predator, Lascannon sponsons, Autocannon Turret, Daemonic Possession
  • Chaos Terminators (x7), Chainfist x3, Lightning Claw, Combi-flamer, Combi-Melta, Reaper Autocannon, Icon of Nurgle

I’m not positive about everything he brought, but this is a generic listing of what I remember:

  • Tech marine w/ Servitors x2
  • Space Marines (x10), Flamer, Lascannon, Sergeant
  • Space Marines (x10), Special Weapons x2, Sergeant
  • Devastator squad, Lascannon x2, Heavy Bolter x2
  • Land Raider x2
  • Dreadnaught x2
  • Landspeeder

We rolled for Mission and got a mission where we each have one objective in our deployment zone and the goal is to protect your own and go take the opponent’s. Deployment was normal Pitched Battle. We rolled for who goes first and I got to choose. I think this was my first and most devastating mistake. I told John to deploy and go first. After deployment, we realized that both of us put our Heavy Support near the objective, not any of our Troop choices. Ugh!

First turn, his Land Raiders and every other weapon he had to take out tanks worked on my two Rhinos and the Predator. One Rhino was utterly destroyed, the other was allowed to stay on the table, but was effectively destroyed, and the Predator also suffered the latter’s fate. Now, the Plague Marines would have to footslog their way to the enemy. Most of the rest of the game was a lot of my guys running toward his while his shot mine to whittle them down. Finally, once the CSMs made it to contact with the Devastator squad, things were looking up for my army. Unfortunately, the CSM squad never could take out the last guy.

In the end, one of his 10-man SM squads jumped into a Land Raider and assaulted from it to overrun my Havocs and take the objective in round 6. I rolled to see if the game ended and it did. I think another round and it might have ended in a tie.

Either way, it was a great game and John is a fun opponent. I’ll definitely continue working on painting my army and maybe one day it’ll be completely done.

Project: Epic Armageddon: Eldar Pt. 4

No pictures today, but I did work on some Epic stuff last night. Got the Aspect Warriors from my new Warhost box put on bases. I used the Aspect Warriors from the Avatar blister as Exarchs for those units and put the extra Aspect Warriors on the Avatar’s base. I got 7 stands of Guardians put on bases and put some Guardians on my Support/Heavy Weapons bases as operators for the guns. I’ll likely use some guardians on the Warlock Titan’s base just for coolness sake. Hopefully, I’ll have enough left over to make another Guardian host.

I still have the Jetbikes, Farseers, Dire Avengers, and Fire Dragons to put on bases. And I have the Firestorms left to assemble as well.

Until I get some air power, that should cover everything.
