I spent most of this weekend assembling the Bretonnian figures I’ve bought over the last couple of weeks in hopes of getting to play on Saturday. That didn’t happen, which was no big deal, but I have this great feeling of accomplishment at having gotten it done. Well, technically, it’s not all done. The Knights and Men At Arms are sans shields and the Battle Standard Bearer is sans standard right now until I at least primer all of them. The bases will all get some little adornments as well. But for now, I’m counting it as “done” since I can play with it now.
The list of what is shown here is as follows (from left to right): Lance of Knights of the Realm (8) with Bretonnian Lord, Men at Arms (16) wih some Empire Swordsmen recruited temporarily, Bowmen (no command figs), Lance of Knights Errant (8) with Paladin Battle Standard Bearer. In the back is a mounted Damsel and the single Mounted Yeoman I have right now, and the Pegasus Knights (4). All the movement trays were homemade by me with sheet styrene and strips of bass wood.
The Pegasus Knights were probably the biggest pain because with the bases and such GW gives you, you’d never be able to rank them up in combat. I went to Hobby Town USA and picked up some thick brass rod, which was a pain to cut, and mounted them as you see there. The biggest trouble was trying to keep them from leaning one way or another. I think some are still leaning just a bit, but I’m not messing with them now.
At this point, I think I can field around 1300-1500 points. Next purchases will be 3 more Mounted Yeomen, another box (or two) of Men At Arms and another lance of Knights.
A trebuchet (or possibly the recommended 2) may come later.
Bought a unit of these today:
I felt like I needed some ranged support for my army and most places I posted the lists I made agreed with that. So, I bought them. Hopefully, this will be “it” until I can save up more cash for Gen Con. It’s an addiction, I tells ya!!
Yesterday I got the following for $35 from a friend of mine:
Bretonnian Lord w/Lance (assembled)
Bretonnian Paladin Battle Standard Bearer (assembled)
Damsels – one mounted, one on foot (assembled)
16x Men-At-Arms (8 partially assembled)
8x Knights of the Realm (Horses assembled)
2x Mounted Yeoman (1 assembled)
My army is now a bit over 1000 points. Sweet!!
So I have bought my first Bretonnians. I have a box of Knights of the Realm and a single Pegasus Knight. Guess I’ll be starting to get them assembled soon.
Well, the commitment has been made, the gauntlet thrown down, etc. I bought the Bretonnia book last night. It’ll probably be a litel while before I get some figs or anything, but there it is.
And based on what I have found out from others, the Lady of the Lake = Wood Elf Queen thing is true, but not in the way I understood it. So, I’m okay with the way it was explained to me.
The pressures of money have now convinced me that Dark Elves are not the army for me, at least not until possibly fall of 2008 when they get new figs.
In the interest of only looking at armies who have had fairly recent figure updates to plastics, I have now decided on Bretonnians. The idea is that I will paint them like one of the houses of the George R.R. Martin “Song of Ice and Fire” series, probably Baratheon, possibly one of the families from Dorn.
The only thing that bothers me is the rumor that the Lady of the Lake, the figure on which the whole of Bretonnian religion is based, is a Wood Elf queen who duped a knight in the woods. How crappy is that? Perhaps they changed that in the latest edition…geez, I hope so.
