Warhammer Fantasy – 200 point league games
by Totengraber on Nov.23, 2009, under Fantasy, Miniatures, Warhammer Fantasy
On Sunday I went over to Games To Die For to play in our local Warhammer Fantasy league. We’re starting at 200 points and adding 100 points every week until we reach 2,000 points (I think). In preparation for this, I have painted up 8 Gnoblar Trappers and some Ironguts, neither of which I ended up using. (continue reading…)
Gaming: Warhammer: First Game With Bretonnians
by Totengraber on Oct.26, 2007, under Miniatures, Warhammer Fantasy
I went to the Game Preserve (Fashion Mall) last night with the intent of making someone there (hopefully someone I knew) re-teach me how to play Warhammer Fantasy Battles. Back about 3 years ago I played Lizardmen and helped my eldest son with his Empire army. I haven’t played at all under the 7th edition rules, but I had heard about some of the rules changes.
Jared was there, but had just started a game vs. a Wood Elf player. Jared was playing Dark Elves. His army was highly mobile with 2 units of Dark Riders, 2 chariots, a unit of Cold-One Knights, some scouting infantry, and mounted characters (one was a sorceress). It looke dlike a pretty even game, but Jared came out on top, I believe. Soon thereafter he and I sat down to play. Here’s the list I brought:
- Damsel (Lvl 2, Warhorse, Lore of Beasts, 2x Dispel Scrolls) – rides with KotR
- Paladin BSB (Virtue of Empathy) -rides with KE
- Men at Arms x25 (FC)
- Peasant Bowmen x10
- Knights Errant x8 (FC)
- Knights of the Realm x8 (FC)
- Pegasus Knights x3 (Musician)
It was a quick game that I was pretty sure I was going to lose anyway. The Lizardmen never really had a lot of cav and I didn’t have that great of a record with them anyway. During most of the game my leadership tests, even with LD 8 most of the time, failed usually by 1. Bowmen ran off the board after getting to shoot once and 3 of their number dying. PK took care of a Dark Rider unit, but not without being held up by its sole survivor. The other units all got flank charged and subsequently destroyed. Something I did forget about with the unit with the Damsel was the Magic Resistance, which I don’t remember if that might have helped. Either way, it was a good re-introduction into the game that I used to really like. I look forward to playing more in the future. In fact, I’m pretty jazzed to get started painting the Knights.
Gaming: Warhammer: Gah!! Choosing an Army!!
by Totengraber on Jun.02, 2007, under Miniatures, Warhammer Fantasy
I was thinking the other day about Games Workshop’s Warhammer Fantasy Battles. I’ve always liked the game even though lots of people would have you believe GW is an “evil empire”. I played Lizardmen back in 2002 or so, not long after 6th edition came out. I loved the game, but felt like the Lizardmen army was lacking in options and “character”. A while later, they got much better models, which was a draw for me as well.
In thinking about all the possible armies, Dark Elves were looking pretty good. I then went on-line and did some reading at Druchii.net and Warseer about the army and found that I think the Dark Elves would “fit” me better than Lizardmen did. However, there’s one problem: most of the figures for the army are metal, which makes them expensive! Not to mention all my other miniatures-related projects going on that would get put on the backburner as a result of buying new Dark Elf figures.
Well, then the dilemma becomes whether I should go with an army with more plastics and thus a little cheaper but play a less than characterful army or do I suck up the idea of expense and get the army I believe I’ll like? In the end I think I will be going with the Dark Elves, but I’ll have to get some stuff done first and save money in the meantime.
