wotrrulebook_873x627.jpg I’ve been trying to make it so I go over the The Game Preserve in the Fashion Mall every other Thursday to play War of the Ring with the folks there. I knew Jeff was wanting to play me last time I was there, so we set up to play soon after we both got there. The people who play there don’t have too many points of stuff yet, so we had to play pretty small games.

First game was Rohan vs. Elves.

wotrrulebook_873x627.jpg I went over to the Game Preserve up at Keystone yesterday to meet up with the regular War of the Ring play group consisting of Jeff, JR and Dan. After BS’ing about the game and some of the armies and rules, Dan challenged me to a game. He brought in some Rohan to beef up his Gondor army to 430 points. He purchased a Fortune to even things up a little more. Here are our lists:

wotrrulebook_873x627.jpg Over the long weekend, I met up with some old friends to play some War of the Ring and show John whatthe game is all about. Tim had come down from Chi-town and JR had some time off from his chef job. We had agreed ahead of time to play 1,000 points; Elves versus their combined forces of Easterlings and Goblins. Since we were trying to show John the rules, we went with a ‘pitched battle’ scenario rather than confusing things with the scenarios from the book. Here is what I recall of their lists:

wotrrulebook_873x627.jpg I mostly worked on War of the Ring stuff this weekend. I got about 100 or so Elves assembled, based, magnetized and primered as well as 18 or so infantry movement trays.

I also worked more on Nuke and Hellsmith for Pulp City. I really need to get these done soon. Nukes toxic look was not really working for my (awesome! gorgeous!) wife/critic. The darker primary green just looked bad to her. This morning, I added some Trollblood Base to the flourescent green I’m using and went over the green parts. I think it looks pretty smooth and less “chalky”. I hope it looks better to her, too.

This morning, I also washed over the Ent with Thornwood green as I’d previously basecoated him in Trollblood Highlight. It looks more like a tree now. I may do some highlighting and such on him and then I need to paint the leaves, moss, fungus and the base (with a dead Uruk-Hai).

War of the Ring – Second game; Elves vs. Isengard – 1,600 points

wotrrulebook_873x627.jpg Bill and I played our second game of War of the Ring last night. Again, he played Isengard while I played my Elves. Bill had purchased a good bit more troops to use such as Uruk-hai Scouts, Uruk-Hai crossbowmen, Ugluk, more Wargs (I think) and maybe just more regular Uruk-Hai. Me, I thought I had enough assembled to make a good 1,600 point list, but I ended up having to use more characters than usual.

Here’s my list:

War of the Ring – First game!! – 1500 points – Elves vs. Isengard

wotrrulebook_873x627.jpg Bill and I decided to play 1500 points for our first game. I thought I had a lot more assembled than that, but as it turns out, that wasn’t so. In either case, we felt like it’d be best to go through all the rules rather than play a smaller game and only use a portion of them. Bill didn’t have any characters, so I lent him my Saruman and Lurtz figures that I’ve had since way back when the skirmish game first came out. Rather than worry about scenarios for this first game, we decided to just do the classic “pitched battle” game.

There are a bunch of rules disputes on the forums around the ‘Net, one of which is whether models/units with the Terror special ability are immune to Terror from other units. Bill claimed he had seen somewhere that Games Workshop had stated that was true, so we went with that, even though I had never heard any such thing. That’s the only rules issue we cleared up prior to the game.

War of the Ring – Quick Review and Buying into the Elves

wotrrulebook_873x627.jpg I bought the book to this new game from Games Workshop a couple of weeks ago. I was originally put off by the cost of the book, but now, having read it and flipped through the pages, I feel like it was worth every penny. The nice thing about it is the book is full color from beginning to end, the army lists for all armies are included, and the pictures of the painted miniatures are cool. Not only that, the book encourages conversions for banner bearers, which prevents people from necessarily needing to purchase their banner bearer models. Go figure.

The rules for War of the Ring (WotR) seem like a simplified Warhammer Fantasy Battles. Rumor has it that the next edition of WHFB will be similar to WotR. I like the rules so far from justthe reading of them. Some highlights:

  • Everything can be pre-measured. Charges are a die roll plus a standard modifier based on unit type.
  • One roll for hitting and wounding.
  • Models are effectively wound counters for the company.
  • In close combat, monsters fight first then cavalry and finally infantry.
  • Epic Heroes are not tied to specific units and can move around.
  • Heroes have Might points and can spend those on heroic actions.
  • Spellcasters automatically get their first spell off with no roll needed. Subsequent spells have to succeed with a Focus roll based on the spell previously cast.
  • No wheeling like in WHFB. As long as the unit doesn’t move more than their Move value.

Looking around on the ‘Net for army lists and such have shown that the Elves are probably the least represented fo rthe Good armies and it seems lots of people want to play Evil. So far I have nearly 2,000 points thanks to the (awesome) wife “letting” me order some stuff.

I am really looking forward to this game and with a few folks at the store being excited and buying models, I should be getting a game in really soon.
