Gaming: CAoR: 2000 Point Hydra List

Joel and I played a game of Confrontation: Age of Ragnarok last night. We played 2000 points so that he could test his Hyena list for a tournament in Dayton at Krystal Keep Games on 12/22/07. Here was the list I used:
- Warriors of the Abyss x9 (Min, +2 Specials – Collector, Standard-bearer, +1 Extra) w/Nilarakh (Elusion Doll)
- Fire Spitters x4

- Hydra Warriors x4 (Min, +1 Special – Psychopomp) w/Kelzaral (Fang of the Hydra, Resurrection of the Cyclops)
- Cyclops x1
- Cthonian Larvae x2
2000 points exactly
Joel’s army went something like this:
- Huntsmen of Vile-Tis x3 w/Velrys (some healing spell)

- Headhunters x3
- Warriors of Blood x9
- Flesh Eaters (pain) x3
We played the “Invasion” scenario. My Fire Spitters sat up on a hill in the center of my deployment zone the whole game and fired when they could. The Cyclops and Warriors deployed on the far right side to go up against the Warriors of Blood. Larvae were toward the left and the Hydra warriors went to the far left to go up against Velrys and Huntsmen. First round the Cyclops was on the Warriors of Blood Killing two of them. The Warriors of the Abyss took out maybe one of them. Larvae jumped on the Flesh Eaters. Hydra Warriors ran toward the Hunstmen. Next round, the Hydra Warriors were wiped out, four Warriors of the Abyss were killed and subsequently resurrected, the Larvae were wounded but saved them all via the gift and Regeneration, and more Warriors of Blood died to the Cyclops. Next round more death to the Warriors of Blood, more wounds saved on the Larvae, Kelzaral ran for his life, Fire Spitters were now in HTH. In the end, we were tied for Elixir, the Larvae were down to one vs. two Flesh Eaters, and the last Larvae finally died thus making it so in this sixth round I would lose, but not by too much. It was a really good game.
I really like the Mid-Nor in this version of Confrontation. They have a lot of staying power and do have some units capable of laying some beats. It’s a shame that they won’t get any new models in coming years, but that’s okay with me since I have a lot of just about everything for that army.

Unfortunately, I didn’t end up playing. I did, however, end up watching a couple of others play. It was Hyena vs. Lion. The Hyena army was looking pretty good when I checked in toward the beginning. Funny thing was the Lion player felt like the game was over somewhere after turn 2 or 3. The Hyena player ended up suggesting a strategy that involved the Lion player’s Knights (with Dragan) charging the Flesh Eater unit (with Shurat). The Flesh Eaters failed their Courage test due to Hyperian and were in rout. The Hyena player had forgotten about the ability to spend Elixir to automatically pass Courage tests. The Lion player used the “Kill ‘Em All!!” tactic to effectively decimate the unit. Dragan has a Strength of 20+ on the charge due to Charge Strength and the Torc of the Lahnars artifact. In the end, the Elixir points were very close, but the Hyena army was all but annihilated. I guess that’s a good thing to say for the system; even when your army is mostly gone, you can still win by controlling objectives.
