I showed up to the store last night to a bit of “drama”. It seems the store owner had commented that if a Flames of War player wanted to use one of the two “good” tables, they would have priority over anyone else who was using it for a non-Flames of War game.

I have a few issues with this logic.

One of which is that our group is there every single Thursday without fail. Some of the guys are able to get there around 3 or 4pm. I feel like if someone gets there first and lays claim to the table, they should get to use it without interruption. There are plenty of boards in the store that can be set up to play any game on the regular tables and there’s nothing stopping the Flames of War players from using those just as much as us. The only leg I feel like anyone has to stand on in this issue is that Thursdays are designated Flames of War days. However, when Thursdays were Confrontation days when we played Confrontation all the time, we weren’t given the option to kick people off of the “good” tables, nor do I think we would have used it anyway. For me, if this rule is enforced, I will no longer visit this store.

In the past, this same owner posted a sign stating that there needed to be progress on people’s painting efforts for armies they would use in the store. This was argued about for some time and the sign eventually came down. I realize that it looks good when painted armies are being played, but some of us have other things to do. By making such a rule, it could make me not even want to come to the store anymore.

This all comes back to my experiences with game store owners. Nearly every one I’ve met have had an attitude that was very non-customer friendly. I just don’t understand this logic. Games are a niche market that just doesn’t make all that much money and to be a success in the business is very rare. So, for an owner to treat the customers in a way that makes them think twice about being in the store, makes no sense to me at all. I know that it must be annoying to have people effectively loiter in your store, especially if they are not making any purchases. But for those who do make purchases 90% of the time they are there, it makes no sense to alienate them.

Anyway…that’s my rant.
