Brian wanted me to teach him Warhammer 40,000 last Thursday. Like an idiot, I lent Fred my rulebook, so I had to recall most things from memory. We muddled through and I think we got most things right. I gave Brian the choice of playing either the Tyranids or the Imperial Guard. He chose the Nids.
I’m not going to try to remember the lists we used or specific things that happened in the game since it was really a “demo” of sorts. I will, however, say that the Tyranids decimated the Imperial Guard via mostly shooting attacks.
It was a fun game, if a bit frustrating when trying to remember all the rules. I’m hoping he got a good feel for them and that we’ll play again soon!

Fred acquired a bunch of Necrons from a friend and has been wanting to learn the game. He asked me on Saturday to teach him. Well, having not played in a long time myself, we got a lot of help from folks in the store last night. Dave, Mike and Jeff were quite helpful with many of the rules I’d forgotten and didn’t want to take the time to look up, which kept the game going and hopefully, Fred learning.
Since I had no idea exactly how many models Fred had, I estimated he’d have 20 or so Warriors, 3 Destroyers, 3 or so Scarab Swarms and the Lord. Turns out he has 70+ Warriors and probably 10+ Scarab Swarms. It also turns out he has a Necron Destroyer Lord as well. In either case, I thought an 800 point game would work well for learning the game and for me to learn the new Tyranid codex, not to mention 800 points is just below what I have painted.

Yesterday I picked up the new Tyranids codex, which I think is pretty damned cool. I know lots of people are upset about most of the changes, like the cost of Carnifexes and the way the biomorphs work, but I quite like it. I still need to pick up some of the new stuff, like Hive Guard and Trygon/Mawlocs and a few more of the old things like another Zoanthrope and maybe a Biovore. I tried to add up all the points I have last night and it looks like a little over 2,200.
On a side note, Fred was able to acquire some Necrons (for free!!), so we’ll probably be throwing own this Tuesday. It’ll give me a chance to remember the 40K rules, learn the new Tyranids and for him to learn the main rules and his army. The only sad thing about the Necrons is the amount of metal models that are pretty much essential, unless you want to buy more of the plastics and do some conversion work.

Well, the Ogres finally had a well-earned victory in the Warhammer League. I played a young guy named John, who I’d played a 600 point game last week where we drew due to his having to leave early.
Here’s the list he used to my recollection:
- Vampire w/an item that lets him keep a dispel die from the previous turn to use as a power die
- 10 Skeletons w/full command and some banner that makes their unit strength twice their normal number
- 10 Grave Guard
- 10 Crypt Ghouls
- 3 Cairn Wraiths
- The Vampire had the spells Raise Dead and Invocation

On Sunday I went over to Games To Die For to play in our local Warhammer Fantasy league. We’re starting at 200 points and adding 100 points every week until we reach 2,000 points (I think). In preparation for this, I have painted up 8 Gnoblar Trappers and some Ironguts, neither of which I ended up using. (more…)

Here’s a pic of some Spinegaunts I finished the other day. I decided to go with a less “colorful” scheme to try and emulate insects on Earth. It didn’t really turn out how I envisioned, they actually turned out better!! when they are all grouped together, they look really cool, IMHO. I have 5 Termagants that are started as well. I anticipate them being finished by Thursday morning.
I’ve also been working on finishing some Ogre Ironguts as well. I hope for them to be done by next week.

Joel (Sryth) is working on building an Empire army from Confrontation Griffin figures. Right now he only has about 1,300 points, so we decided to do a small game this past Thursday. (more…)

I set up late last week to play a guy named Shawn who has been hanging out at Games To Die For lately for Sunday. We didn’t really decide on points level or even what time we’d both be there, so I think it was assumed we’d play as big an army as both of us can cover and meet near when the store opened. When I arrived at about 12:30, Shawn was already there waiting with his Tomb Kings army. (more…)
